Senior School Athletics
Our Senior School Athletics Program focuses on exposing students to a wide variety of sports. The goal is to inspire our student-athletes to build on the foundational skills they developed in the Middle School.

Our student-athletes have opportunities to join recreational, athletic development programs and to try out for our competitive teams. We offer 48 competitive teams at the Middle and Senior School level. The majority of our teams are coached by external, professional coaches.

Within our physical education classes, athletic development programs and competitive teams, we prioritize: teamwork, fair play, hard work, and school spirit. We empower students to pursue their personal best and strive for athletic excellence within a healthy, supportive and safe sporting environment.

Our faculty and coaches support students to balance academics and athletics so they will reap the benefits of sport and physical activity. In addition to developing tools that will help them stay active and healthy for life, participating in sport helps students manage stress and anxiety, build relationships and community, and develop time management skills.

Recognizing that many female athletes stop playing sports during adolescence, in January 2025, York hosted a day-long conference called “We Can Play” for female athletes in Grades 6 to 12. Supported by the school’s Annual Fund, the goal of this inaugural conference was to encourage and inspire girls to continue participating in sports.

Our Team Name and Mascot
In September 2025, The York School introduced a new name for the school’s teams, as well as a new mascot. The team name, The York Storm, unites the elements of the school’s four spirit houses: air, water, earth and fire. It also symbolizes the strength, passion, confidence and determination of our student-athletes. A storm is a powerful natural phenomenon that arises when air, water, earth and fire (lightning and heat) converge. The York Storm represents the collective energy and teamwork demonstrated by all our athletes, and emphasizes that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Our mascot is a peregrine falcon named Bolt. Peregrine falcons are the fastest members of the animal kingdom, with a diving speed of over 300 km/h. In addition to their speed, falcons have keen eyesight (eight times better than human vision), and incredible precision when hunting prey. The falcon’s resilience and ability to adapt to challenges inspires our student-athletes to overcome adversity and soar.
*As of September 2026, Grade 6 will be joining our Junior School campus.
