Welcome to the Middle School at The York School, an innovative and inviting place where students aged 11–14 embark on a dynamic stage of personal and academic growth. At this important point in their educational journey, young people are developing their identities, stretching their thinking, and building the skills and confidence needed to thrive in a complex and interconnected world.
As Principal, I am proud to lead a division where every aspect of school life reflects our mission: to nurture curious learners to become globally minded leaders with integrity and purpose. Our Middle School is grounded in the belief that students flourish when their physical, social, emotional, and academic needs are honoured and supported in an inclusive, future-focused environment.
Guided by the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), our curriculum is designed around three pillars: Holistic Learning, Global Citizenship, and Intercultural Understanding. Students engage with meaningful concepts and real-world challenges, developing their voice and sense of agency through inquiry, collaboration, and reflection. A core team of experienced educators, including teachers, social workers, learning strategists, and administrators, work in close partnership to support each student’s well-being and achievement.
The Middle School experience includes a rich academic program across nine subjects: English, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, French, Physical Education, Instrumental Music, Visual Arts, and Technology, while students in Grades 7 and 8 explore passions through electives like Mandarin, Coding, Drama, and Learning Strategies. Our robust experiential learning opportunities, from outdoor education to curriculum-linked field excursions, bring learning to life beyond the classroom.
Beyond academics, a vibrant student life includes arts, athletics, clubs, and leadership experiences that cultivate a sense of belonging and responsibility. Our students are encouraged to take risks, advocate for themselves and others, and develop empathy as they engage with local and global issues through service and action.
Middle School marks a critical transition where independence, individuality, and curiosity are fostered in a caring and intellectually stimulating setting. I invite you to explore our exceptional approach to Middle School, it is a community of learners, leaders, and compassionate citizens, and we are excited to share it with you.
